Many hawthorn patterns are tied in the same way as an emerging upwing fly, and this is great and they catch fish! However, given a hawthorn is a terrestrial fly, when it is on the water is actually slowly sinking, not emerging. We have designed a pattern that represents the drowning hawthorn, it still fishes as a dry but it submerges into the surface film, just like a drowning fly!
