June – River Fly Selection

June is one of the most varied months for river fly fishing in the UK, with warmer water temperatures and a wide range of aquatic and terrestrial insects available to trout.

By early June, Large Dark Olive hatches have usually tailed off on most rivers, giving way to a broader mix of upwinged flies. Mayflies may continue to hatch throughout June on rivers where they are present, although timing and intensity vary considerably from one water to another. On some rivers, activity may peak early, while on others it can extend well into the month.

Alongside Mayflies, Medium Olives and Yellow Mays become increasingly important, particularly during settled weather. These flies often provide steady and reliable dry fly fishing when fish are feeding confidently on the surface.

Stoneflies remain a feature on suitable rivers, often accompanied by Alderflies and increasing sedge activity, especially later in the day. These larger insects can encourage positive surface feeding, particularly on faster water.

Terrestrial insects also play a significant role through June. Black Gnats continue to feature, and beetles become an important food source, particularly on warm, calm days when they are blown onto the water from bankside vegetation.

While surface fishing is often productive in June, subsurface patterns still have their place, especially during periods of bright sun or between hatches. Nymphs and other subsurface imitations can remain effective when fish drop below the surface.

The flies in this collection have been selected to reflect typical UK June river conditions, offering a balanced selection of upwinged flies, sedges, terrestrials, and dependable subsurface patterns.

If you’re unsure which flies best suit your local river or current conditions, we’re always happy to help.
