February – Stillwater Fly Selection

February stillwater fishing in the UK remains largely winter-driven, with cold water temperatures keeping fish movement slow and deliberate. While conditions are often challenging, consistent feeding opportunities do still exist with the right approach.

Subsurface food sources continue to dominate. Bloodworm remains one of the most important winter patterns on stillwaters, particularly in deeper water where fish are conserving energy. Slow, controlled presentations close to the bottom are often the most effective method at this time of year.

As daylight gradually increases, buzzer larvae and pupae can begin to play a slightly larger role, especially during milder spells. While full buzzer hatches are unlikely in February, small numbers of larvae and the occasional pupa can be enough to draw a response from fish, particularly in shallower areas or along margins that warm more quickly.

Fish behaviour in February is typically cautious. Takes can be subtle, and depth control is critical. Slow retrieves, long pauses, and accurate presentation often prove far more effective than active or aggressive methods.

Surface activity remains rare and should generally be treated as opportunistic rather than expected. Most success through February comes from fishing subsurface patterns thoughtfully and with patience.

The flies in this collection have been selected specifically for UK stillwater fishing in February, focusing on dependable winter patterns such as bloodworm and early-season buzzer imitations that continue to produce fish in cold water conditions.

If you’re unsure which flies best suit your local stillwater or current conditions, we’re always happy to help.
