VISION HERO 2 HAS LANDED!

September – Stillwater Fly Selection

September stillwater fishing in the UK often benefits from cooler nights and more stable conditions, which can encourage trout to feed more confidently after the height of summer.

Daddy Long Legs remain an important terrestrial pattern through September and can provide excellent surface sport when conditions allow. These flies are often most effective during breezy or overcast weather, particularly when terrestrials are blown onto the water.

Pond and Lake Olives continue to hatch well into early autumn on many stillwaters, providing reliable dry fly opportunities during settled conditions. These hatches can be particularly effective during calmer periods, when fish are prepared to rise freely and feed steadily at the surface.

Subsurface food sources also remain highly relevant. Freshwater shrimp and midges continue to be prolific, offering consistent feeding opportunities below the surface when fish are reluctant to rise. These patterns are especially effective during brighter parts of the day or between surface activity.

Beetles can still play a useful role, particularly on waters with overhanging vegetation where terrestrials regularly fall onto the surface. When present, they can account for confident takes close to the margins.

The flies in this collection have been selected to reflect typical UK September stillwater conditions, balancing productive surface patterns with dependable subsurface options as fish behaviour begins to shift toward autumn.

If you’re unsure which flies best suit your local stillwater or current conditions, we’re always happy to help.
