June – Stillwater Fly Selection
June is one of the most reliable months for stillwater fly fishing in the UK, with warmer water temperatures supporting sustained insect activity and more predictable feeding behaviour.
Pond and Lake Olives should now be hatching regularly on many stillwaters, often providing dependable dry fly fishing during settled conditions. These hatches can occur throughout the day, particularly when light levels and wind allow fish to feed confidently at the surface.
Caddis flies are also a consistent feature through June. Adult caddis can be present in good numbers, especially later in the day, and often bring positive surface feeding when fish are prepared to rise freely.
On warmer days, Damsel flies can hatch in significant numbers on suitable waters. This is often one of the highlights of early summer stillwater fishing, with fish actively hunting damsel nymphs in the margins and responding aggressively when conditions are right.
Mayfly hatches may continue throughout June on stillwaters where the species is present. These hatches are typically localised and weather-dependent but can provide excellent dry fly sport when timing and conditions align.
Terrestrial insects become increasingly important as June progresses. Beetles are a common and reliable food source, often accounting for steady surface feeding, particularly during calm spells.
The flies in this collection have been selected to reflect typical UK June stillwater conditions, covering key aquatic hatches, margin-focused patterns, and effective surface flies for periods of confident feeding.
