May – Stillwater Fly Selection

May is one of the most productive months for stillwater fly fishing in the UK, with rising water temperatures and increasing insect activity encouraging more regular surface feeding.

Pond and Lake Olives should now be hatching with increasing frequency on many waters, often providing reliable dry fly opportunities during settled conditions. These hatches can occur throughout the day, particularly during calmer periods when fish are prepared to feed confidently near the surface.

Caddis flies also become an important feature through May, with adults appearing regularly and offering exciting dry fly fishing, especially later in the day. When caddis are active, fish often feed positively, making these patterns a valuable part of any stillwater fly selection.

On warmer days, Damsel flies can begin to hatch in significant numbers. These hatches are often localised to specific waters and areas, but when conditions are right they can produce excellent sport, with fish actively hunting nymphs and intercepting adults near the margins.

Towards the end of the month, Mayfly hatches may occur on stillwaters where the species is present. These are often short-lived and highly dependent on temperature and weather conditions, but they can bring some memorable surface feeding when they do happen.

Terrestrial insects also play an increasing role. Hawthorns may still be present, particularly earlier in the month, while beetles become a consistent food source, often accounting for steady surface takes during warm, calm conditions.

The flies in this collection have been selected to reflect typical UK May stillwater conditions, covering key aquatic hatches, emerging terrestrials, and effective patterns for both surface and near-surface fishing.
