April Hawthorns
Towards the end of April, normally on or around the 25th we will experience hatches of hawthorns flies all over the UK. This black terrestrial fly with its long gangly legs is an ungainly flier and will end up on the water in large numbers.
Trout absolutely love these flies. The hawthorn can often be the first big rise of the year and it is essential to have this pattern in your box and fish can rise at hawthorns at the exclusion of everything else.
Below are my go to patterns. The popper hopper and the red legs are great for still water and the wet and dry hawthorn are my river selections.
