Sawyers pheasant tail nymph is one of the most successful and popular fishing flies of all time. Invented by river keeper frank sawyer on the upper reaches of the avon, the pheasant tail nymph or PTN is an all round imitation covering most of the nymphs you will find in the river. This version is as close to the original fishing fly as you will find and is equally successful on lake as it is on the river.
If you need a trout fly in your box to cover as many nymphs as possible in one fly then the pheasant tail nymph is the one to do it. When coaching this is our recommendation fishing fly for beginners as an all round sub-surface pattern as it will catch fish all year round on both river and still water.
