VISION HERO 2 HAS LANDED!

September – River Fly Selection

September often marks the return of more consistent dry fly fishing on UK rivers, as cooler nights and shortening days bring renewed insect activity.

The main event through September is typically the return of the Large Dark Olive, which can provide some excellent dry fly action when conditions align. Hatches are often strongest during overcast, humid days and can be more reliable than those seen during the height of summer, making careful observation particularly worthwhile.

Terrestrial insects continue to feature, with Beetles remaining an important part of a trout’s diet, especially on rivers with plenty of bankside vegetation. These patterns can be effective throughout the day when fish are willing to look up.

Caddis activity also becomes increasingly significant. The Carperer Caddis in particular is often the dominant species through September and can be frequent on many rivers, providing confident surface feeding, especially during the afternoon and early evening.

While dry fly opportunities often improve during September, subsurface patterns should not be overlooked. During periods between hatches or on cooler days, nymphs and other subsurface imitations can remain effective, particularly when fish are feeding more selectively.

The flies in this collection have been selected to reflect typical UK September river conditions, focusing on Large Dark Olives, autumn caddis patterns, terrestrials, and dependable subsurface flies.

If you’re unsure which flies best suit your local river or current conditions, we’re always happy to help.
