After putting up a good fight during spooling up like a complete half wit I recovered the situation the next day. I'm sure that I will never have to rely on the backing during fish fights on my home river, the Upper Don Fly Fishers beats on the River Don at Wharncliffe, as the fish I have caught so far are on the smallish side but one day who knows what leviathan may be tempted!
