January – Stillwater Fly Selection

January stillwater fishing in the UK is typically defined by cold water temperatures, slow fish movement, and a strong reliance on subsurface food sources.

At this time of year, insect hatches on stillwaters are extremely limited. Any surface activity is rare and highly weather-dependent, making blind dry fly fishing an unreliable approach for most conditions.

The most consistent food sources through January are those that remain active year-round. Bloodworm is a primary staple in many stillwaters and often accounts for the majority of takes during winter. Fish will commonly feed close to the bottom or suspend slowly, responding best to naturally presented patterns fished with minimal movement.

Small nymphs and buzzer larvae can also be effective, particularly on milder days or in slightly shallower water where fish are prepared to move short distances to feed. Subtle presentation and controlled depth are usually far more important than fly size or colour.

Fish behaviour in January is typically cautious and energy-conserving. Slow retrieves, long pauses, and accurate depth control often prove more effective than active methods.

The flies in this collection have been selected specifically for UK stillwater fishing in January, focusing on dependable subsurface patterns that continue to produce fish in cold water conditions.

If you’re unsure which flies best suit your local stillwater or current conditions, we’re always happy to help.
