The Hawthorne Barbless imitates the black hawthorn fly, a terrestrial associated with spring and early summer in the UK. Warm, breezy weather can carry these land-bred insects onto rivers and stillwaters, producing confident surface feeding.
Fish it close to banks, beneath overhanging vegetation and along wind lanes. Allow it to drift naturally, adding only an occasional small twitch. It is most effective when hawthorn flies are genuinely present rather than simply because the calendar suggests them. A convincing, purposeful pattern that makes every cast feel capable of producing a fish.
