The Elk Hair Caddis is an excellent, buoyant dry fly for trout and grayling feeding on adult caddis, also known as sedges. Its swept-back elk-hair wing creates the roof-shaped outline of the natural and helps the fly stay visible and afloat in broken water.
Fish it on rivers during caddis activity, especially around riffles, glides and banks where adults are hatching or returning to lay eggs. Begin with a drag-free drift, then try a short lift or controlled skate because caddis often move across the surface. It is also a useful searching dry when fish are looking up in faster water. A dependable dry that can turn a quiet rise into a memorable take.
