VISION HERO 2 HAS LANDED!

December – River Fly Selection (Grayling)

December is a core month for grayling fishing on UK rivers, with cold water temperatures and reduced surface activity encouraging fish to feed steadily below the surface.

During milder spells, Large Dark Olives may still hatch sporadically, and grayling will often rise willingly when these brief opportunities occur. Any dry fly action at this time of year is typically short-lived and highly dependent on weather conditions, making observation and timing especially important.

For most December conditions, subsurface patterns provide the most consistent approach. Freshwater shrimp and louse remain ever-present close to the riverbed and form a primary food source for grayling throughout winter. These patterns are particularly effective when fish are holding in deeper glides and steady flows, feeding methodically rather than aggressively.

Grayling often continue to feed confidently through winter, but success in December usually comes from fishing accurately at the correct depth with natural imitations and controlled presentation. Small adjustments to weight and drift can make a significant difference.

The flies in this collection have been selected specifically for UK grayling fishing in December, focusing on dependable subsurface patterns alongside the occasional olive dry fly option for those rare but rewarding surface moments.

If you’re unsure which flies best suit your local river or current conditions, we’re always happy to help.
