May is one of the most productive stillwater trout months. Water temperatures are comfortable, aquatic life is abundant and trout often feed confidently throughout the day. Buzzers, damsels, corixa, shrimp and beetles all become important, while recently stocked fish may still respond to mobile attractor patterns.
Buzzers remain one of the most reliable food sources, particularly on calm mornings. Diawl Bachs, Crunchers, Pheasant Tail Nymphs and Hare's Ear Nymphs continue to take fish below the surface. As the month progresses, trout begin looking for larger prey. Damsel nymphs become increasingly important around weed beds and margins, and corixa can produce excellent fishing on warm days.
On stocked fisheries, attractor patterns continue to have their place, but the seasonal focus should now shift from winter lures towards damsel-style movement.
