There is rarely a single "best" fly, fly line or rod. The right choice depends on where you're fishing, the species you're targeting, the time of year, the conditions and your own level of experience. Before recommending any product, we first try to understand the fishing situation rather than simply suggesting the most popular item.
When recommending flies, we consider the natural food available, the behaviour of the fish, the water conditions and the most effective method of presentation. Understanding what the fish are likely to be feeding on is usually far more important than following the latest trend or choosing the newest fly pattern.
When recommending tackle, we think about the complete fishing system rather than individual products. A fly rod, fly line, leader and fly all need to work together to perform properly. Choosing the correct rod action and matching it with the right fly line taper is just as important as selecting the correct fly.
We like to think of every product we sell as a tool designed to do a specific job, rather than a fashion statement. Different fishing situations demand different tools. A delicate dry fly on a small trout stream requires a very different outfit to casting large streamers for pike, fishing sinking lines on a reservoir or presenting heavy flies to Atlantic salmon.
The same principle applies wherever you fish. Whether you're targeting wild brown trout on a Derbyshire river, grayling in winter, rainbow trout on a reservoir, Atlantic salmon and sea trout, or travelling abroad to fish for bonefish, permit, tarpon or giant trevally, the aim is always the same - to select the best combination of tackle for the job in hand.

Likewise, a beginner learning to cast will often benefit from flies that are easier to present than large, heavily weighted or highly wind-resistant patterns.
